Preconception

The History

A tale of zygote creation, Preconception was performed in Theatre Odyssey's 2008 Ten-Minute Play Festival, where, directed by Preston Boyd, it won the Best Play award. Alexander Horstmann and Chelsey Panisch originated the parts, and they remain my favorite Sperm and Egg. (Imagine writing that sentence.) Preconception has also won awards in Australia and New Zealand and has been performed in India as well.

As part of the Sydney Short + Sweet Festival in 2011, Preconception won the award for Best Play the evening it was performed. I always allow directors to make whatever choices they want because I'm fascinated by their interpretations. This version, very different from the original Sarasota production, was directed by Deborah Mulhall and starred Amelia Tranter and Vincent Andriano.

Phillip (Phil) Brooks directed Preconception, and he and his cast advanced to the Short+Sweet 2011 finals as one of ten plays (from the 40 plays presented). Phil's IMDB page doesn't include all his work, which includes appearances in Brokenwood Mysteries, a favorite show of mine, and the US-produced Spartacus.

Catherine (Cath) Boniface, wearing a prom dress, played Egg. Catherine's several credits (see IMDB) included four appearances on Xena, Warrior Princess as well as an appearance on Spartacus.

Grae Burton, as Sperm, met Egg wearing a tux. Grae's credits (see IMDB) also included the " Xenaverse" when he appeared in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Young Hercules. Among his many TV appearances was one of episode of Brokenwood Mysteries.
